Green Acres story begins in the early 1940s, when Elmer Nielsen fell in love with Vera and dreamed of creating a home where their family could grow and thrive. He purchased a 60-acre farm filled with chickens, cattle, and horses, imagining a peaceful place rooted in warmth and connection.
As the years passed, Elmer’s dream for the land blossomed. When the World’s Fair arrived in the 1960s, he welcomed visitors by transforming the family farm into a cheerful campground full of friendly faces and comfortable stays. Guests from all over found a home away from home on Elmer’s land.
After the fair, Elmer saw another opportunity to bring people together—this time for seniors in the community. With care and intention, he created a 55+ Senior Community, officially opening Green Acres in 1968. Still family‑owned and operated today, it has been a trusted, welcoming place for seniors to enjoy life, build friendships, and feel at home.
